My fellow Members,

It has been an eventful year at the Radio Club, with some exciting events like the Kempton Park Rallies, Kew Bridge Steam Museum Special Event Station, the purchase of our new Club Radio as well as good results from the IOTA contest and the VHF Field Day with the Middlesex DX Group, to name but a few.

We have also seen the sad departure from our Club and from this World, our "silent keys", Brian and Mike, and our thoughts are with their families during this Christmas and New Year period.

I would like to thank each and every one of you for your hard work in making the club a pleasant place to spend our Friday evenings, after a hard week's work.

I would like to wish all of you and your families a very happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year 2010.

Let's make 2010 an exciting and happy year for all of us.

The club has learned of the passing of Mike G1WIA 10 December.

On behalf of the club members we send our deepest sympathy and condolences to his family at this difficult time.

Only last week Mike was enthusiastic in learning about our new club radio and fortunately, a photograph was taken with Mike at the controls.

We will miss a good friend.

New club Icom IC-756 ProIII

With the club being 21 years old this year a birthday treat was the obvious decision of the members. As a result the club can now enjoy a IC-756 PRO III HF/50MHz All Mode Transceiver with matching speaker and a power unit.

The Icom was chosen because of the accessibility of ‘plug and play’ amp’s our existing computer networking and of course it complements our existing HF station.

What a great weekend moving the club station to Kew Steam Museum by invitation from the Museum. We was asked to set up a radio amateur station GB0KEW so we could become involved with the weekend celebrating the ‘Home Front’ during the Second World War in conjuction with ‘Pumping Stations on the Air’.

The demonstration station was supported by the RSGB Region 9 Area Manager Alison Johnston (G8ROG).

The weekend started as visitors entered and where first met by the staff volunteers dressed up as either the Home Guard, Shop Keepers, local Police, military Police and within the shadows ‘Viv the Spive’ selling watches petrol coupons and ladies stockings!

The time table of events to entertain the public was spaced through out the day and included demonstrations ranging of all of the steam water pumping engines and the steam railway together with demonstrations of ‘Make and mend’, Ministry of Food ‘, Dig for Victory’ and how the unsung heroes of London Transport kept the Busses, Tram’s and underground railways going despite the attacks from enemy action as this part of London was heavily damaged during the Blitz. The tea room served a war time menu including span fritters and corn beef war time prices! We were well fed at Second World War prices!

Our radio station an ICOM line up with matching ATU and amp worked into a Windom antenna which was supported by the main water tower and stretched across the main car park. We would like to thank all the stations that called into GB0KEW over the weekend and made our event possible to demonstrate our hobby. We are looking forward to receiving QSL cards so that they can be added and displayed next year together with the QSL cards which we have received over the last two years.

Within our photographs are some pictures which show the view across West London from the top of the Water Tower and for those wondering how high the tower is well it’s over 247 steps! And the views show Wembley Stadium with Box Hill in the background, Central London and Docklands and either direction along the Thames towards Richmond and South London.

M2W in RSGB IOTA Contest 2009

Antennas are up, and Radios are in place ready for the go at 1pm local time on Saturday 24th July.

We are operating from a site near Battle, East Sussex.

With 4 people ready on site and more due on Saturday we will be a Multi-Single station. One Run station calling CQ, and the second collecting only the IOTA islands as multipliers.

If I can, I will be posting Lots of photos, but the internet it slow here, so my not be available until after the weekend.

The results have been published and without further ado the attached image should attest to how Whitton Amateur Radio Group using M2W did.

We entered as a Multi-Two entry. This meant we could have 2 radios working the bands for full 48 hours. The 2nd stations was not just for spotting multipliers.

We came 1st in England as a Multi-Two station with 1,733,312 points.

Thank You to all who operated and worked us, and whilst we didn't put an entry in for 2008, hopefully we will be back with vigor to put on a superb entry in 2009.

EU-123 ARRAN

The Middlesex DX Group are getting ready to Embark on their trip to The Isle Of Arran EU-123. The group will be active from the 4th Of October till the 10th of October.

The Isle of Arran, Scotland is one of the most southerly Scottish island and sits in the Firth of Clyde between Ayrshire and Kintyre. Arran is 19 miles long by 10 miles wide but has a remarkable diversity of landscapes and seascapes. (www.visitarran.net)

Members going are Simon 2E0VAG, Kevin G1KAW, John G0KLX, Carl 2E1IDC & Jason M1PRO.

The group will be active from 160m to 70cms and will be doing some FSK on 2 metre's and EME and will be activating some SOTA summits with the call MS0MDG/P. It is also hoped that they will have Echolink operational which will enable contact back to West London.

The station will consist of the Icom IC-746Pro HF/6/2m Radio from the Whitton Amateur Radio Group and for antennas they have planned the following;

5BTV and Dipoles for 40 and 80m, on 6m a 5 element tonna
2 metre a 2 x 17 elements tonna Stacked
70cms they are hoping to have 2 x 21 element tonna's

Sunday 24th & Monday 25th - 10am - 5pm

Kew Bridge Steam Museum - http://www.kbsm.org this year (as last) welcomed the radio club to demonstrate amateur radio to the public and for this to be accomplished Kew kindly gave us open access to the museum to install the station and the antenna using the main feature of the museum the Water Tower.

The Museum opened in 1975, and is housed in a unique collection of listed buildings, some of which are let to local craftspeople. The Victorian brick tower stands 197 feet tall. The site was originally a pumping station, delivering water to West London.

As a result over the weekend using HF 274 countries where worked on HF

The GB0KEW station comprised of an Icon PRO 3 into IC2KL producing 300w into a full size G5RV. The G5RV was 100 feet at its centre with one end being 159 feet higher using the water tower for support.

Kew provided us with an excellent location within the main building which gave us the opportunity to promote our hobby and the radio club.

Throughout the day we were able to demonstrate our radio station using Single Side Band and Morse code, the latter attracting the public in considerable numbers.

We was very pleased to make contact with other GB special event stations operating for Pumping Stations on the Air and we hope they enjoyed the weekend as much as we did.

Perseids 2008 expedition

Hello all just you might like to know how my solo expedition to East Sussex JO00EW went well.

After arriving late on Thursday evening I started to put up the antennas about 8am because I was concerned with possible wx conditions as the forecast indicated being wet.

My aerials was 1x 15 element on 144 MHz at about 25 feet and about 6 feet below 1x 5ele on 50 MHz the whole lot rotated from the bottom. I got that all up by about 11am next was the internals.

My portable station was my Yaesu 736R driving an amplifier delivering 300w on 144 MHz. The Yaesu 736R was also driving a 100w brick amp on 50 MHz and a Laptop for using WSJT software. My laptop was also linked to the internet for ON4KST Chatback. And a lightning detector with an audio alarm is very useful on an open hill. At this point I had a problem with the software this took about an hour to sort out.

So first contact was at 14.30 hours with OM3FC located in JN98VG the rest of the day was very slow due to the fact it is a long time to the peak.

Saturday went well but an aurora killed ‘Meteor Scatter’ to the North East. So I looked South West to ‘EA’ as I could see on ON4KST EA stations they were active from the north coast of Spain to SW UK. I managed to work 4 stations via tropo mode most were 59 SSB and I noted that stations in London and further North were giving 51 and 41 reports. However later about 2100 hours an E opening resulted but not for me as I was located right under the reflection point but I could hear EI working Central Europe no good to me being under the reflection point.

Next day was very poor after effects of aurora still present so operated on 50mhz ms for a while very interesting mode this.

Monday started early at 01.30 hours with 9A4EW on 144 ms worked best DX today RU1AC 2135 km RX1AS 2127 km last contact of the day was at 22.00.

Up early again on the day of the predicted peak 0440 hours and worked OH6KTL as the Peek was due around 10.00 hours but the peak was late, I think about 12.00 -13.00 hours.

I was up early again on Wednesday at 00.15 hours and worked a string of YUs then to bed for a while. Then awoke to 40mph winds and rain and my main concern was how am I going to get that antennas down in this weather wind but managed it safely and no damage to the antennas.

Whitton Community Centre Open Day - 5 May 2008

On the 5 May 2008 our club together with all the other organisation which meet at the Centre participated in a public ‘Open Day’ to show to the residents of Whitton what we get up to.

The variety of clubs which meet at the Centre can be seen on the Centres web page www.whitton.ca.freeuk.com

The day was a great success for the Centre with a considerable number of locals signing up for membership.

Our demonstration stations included the club’s HF set up using the Windom dipole together with a second HF station using ‘digi modes and connected to our 3 element HF beam. This station was setup to attract those who like using computers and how they can be mixed in with our hobby.

However, what stole the show for us was the 2m station set up by Kevin G1KAW who at the last moment confirmed an ‘Earth-Moon-Earth’ contact with the USA.

To those who contacted the station by radio ‘a big thank to all of you who called in us al as the demo station is only as good as the quality of the contacts made.

You will see that we where visited by our local Councilor Cranfield-Adams who was in his last week of being Mayor of the Borough of Richmond upon Thames.

If you look into our old Club web page you will see that over the years our local events have attracted the Mayor. However, on this occassion it was a pleasure to introduce Councilor Cranfield-Adams and his companions to our club members and to demonstrate our hobby.

During the day and with the Mayor present we showed the RSGB video which was of great interest to visitors. The RSGB video in question is a few years old but enjoyed by us as a club as it shows our club and members during the GQ0MIN demonstration.

It was a great success and everyone who attended had a great time.

7 Kilowatts in the Dark Continent

The talk we had on the last DXpedition to Africa the VooDoo Contest Group we had the privilege of not one, but two VooDudes:-

The talk was on how the group travels to Africa, how the setup was acheived, and of course operating in the contest.

The 7 man team used Elecraft K2/100 radios and Alpha linear rigs. There was stations setup on 160m (doubled as 10m during day), 80m, 40m, 20m, 15m, & a multiplier station.

Antennas consisted of Verticals on 160m & 80m, an 80m sloper antenna, HF yagis on 40m, 20m, 15m & 10m. There was also 2 flag antennas for the LF bands.

By the end on the contest the team had a claimed score of 39million points and had worked every zone except Alaska.

A few even stayed on a few days after the contest ended to work 125 stations on EME.

Logging for the team was done by the Win-Test contest logging software

It was a great talk by the two speakers and it was just shy of 1am by the time I got home, but I didn't care, by Paul MØTZO.

M2W - CQ WPX SSB Contest 2007 Results

Even though the clubs call sign M2W is a very small RF footprint within the Contest world the actual result we achieved during the 2007 CQ WW contest is quite remarkable.

The club call M2W has been listed within the section of ‘Multi- operator two transmitter ‘Europe’ CQ Amateur Radio January 2008. Taking into account that we had a considerable number of first time/newly licence operators taking part our achievement as a club is fantastic. The results show us listed as 3rd in the UK (2nd if you do not count Scotland!!) and 12th overall in the subdivision we entered.

Just to verify M2W has had 1,326,274 points confirmed and the station just above us was G4IIY.

G4IIY managed to achieve 1,391,190 points. Only having, 64,916 points between us is a target for us next year.

So what are we going to do then to go up the point’s ranking and to beat Ian G4IIY? I have a suggestion for the next AGM we must agree to sign up ‘2 Vlad’s,. CQ CQ de UA9FAR x2 can we be heard in Asiatic Russia!

A big ‘well done’ to all who took part to make this club event such a success, above all the team work and fun we all had taking part made it all worthwhile. We have quite a few QSL cards to complete any volunteers?

I bet no other contest station taking part around the world had two disco parties of 100+ people taking place on two separate nights/mornings in the room next to the shack in there building! That must be worth some extra points?

We have been invited to take part in the 2nd ‘International Pumping Stations on the Air' weekend.

This will take place on the Bank Holiday weekend in August 2008 - Sunday 24th & Monday 25th - 10am - 5pm (Official times but you can do whatever times you want). The intention of the event is to set up amateur radio special event stations at as many of the pumping stations as possible throughout the whole of the world. HF, VHF, the scope of our station is entirely up to you.

We need to register for the 2008 event therefore; your commitment to the club event/station is need ASAP. Members please see Club Forum to respond or contact Mike G1WIA.

What a great weekend undertaking a special event station at Kew Steam Museum http://www.kbsm.org/ . We would like to say within our web page a ‘big thank you’ to the Kew Steam Museum for allowing us to take part (August Bank Holiday Weekend, (26th and 27th August) while Kew Bridge Steam Museum stepped back to the 1940’s and inviting us along for the journey. Throughout the weekend there was many different activities for all the visitors to take part in. We was able to explore all aspects of life on the home front, from make do and mend to how to make nutritious meals from the rations.

The Kew Steam Museum Café served a special menu which includes dishes from ration recipes and once you’ve tasted them, the man from the Ministry (of Food) will be there to show you how to make the rations stretch further, using vegetables from our Dig for Victory garden. As well as a food collection dustbin for pigs! (not Greyhounds)

Outside they had the Auxiliary Fire Service on standby in case incendiary bombs fall on the site and also explained how bomb disposal takes place.

The make do and mend ladies were on hand to show you how to make the clothes ration stretch by reusing old clothes, darning and patching, as well as how to support our soldiers by knitting for the forces. Having been to a number of radio rallies over the year’s maybe we should ask these ladies to attend Kempton!

For children visiting the open day there was the opportunities to dress up in 1940’s costume, to help the war effort may making your own recycled envelopes and to hunt the spy that has left a clue somewhere in the museum. You can also ‘dig for victory’ and be evacuated on our waterworks railway. The pumping station itself demonstrated the measures taken to ensure that water supplies get through despite the effects of air raids and shortages.

And for a special something extra on the Monday we was able to see the wartime dancing team the GI Jitterbugs will be doing demonstrations and have a go sessions. This I will not expand on but to report that quite a few of our club members who wish to remain nameless had a go!

We was also given a special Metropolitan Water board wartime pass and a limited edition Kew News giving you information about the timetable for the weekend and tips for the blackout as well as other wartime stories.

Our HF Station was located at the foot of the main water Tower next to the air raid balloon with our antennas supported by a rope. To attach the antennas it was necessary to climb 273 steps! up the tower. Our station consisted of an Icom and a Yaesu amp supplying 400w to mono band dipoles.

GB0KEW success was due to of the number of stations calling us therefore, helping to demonstrate our great hobby. However, for those who we did not manage to make contact with us we apologise but the demand for the call sign together with the considerable frequency background noise combined with a steam train whistle, air raids siren and the public asking questions it was a great effort for our operators to hear stations calling in. You will see from the photograhs that we did not want the station isolated from the public by headphones or barriers but wanted the public to be looking over our shoulders to see the the radio station in action.

So how many contacts did we manage between 10am and 5pm each day?

We have over the years taken a number of photographs from our Church Tower and from the top of Kempton Race Course and placed on our web page but please do make a point of reviewing our photographs taken from the top of the Kew Steam Museum water Tower as they show West London on a sunny clear day. What a great view!

This special event HF station at Kew Steam Museum was a huge success for the club and allowed amateur radio to be showed to the public at its best. It could be said that this event has been one of the finest we have undertaken for some considerable time because of Kew Steam Museum welcoming us and allowing the club the opportunity to demonstrate our hobby to the public.

Well done to Mike G1WIA in arranging the station facility and to all of those who participated with GB0KEW.

New Club mast

Over the years the club members have taken on many projects in regards to club antennas to participate in demonstration or contest stations. However, on Saturday 30 June in continuous rain we installed the footings and mast ground post for a new club extendable mast. This with the long wire to the adjoining church and our HF verticals and 2m/70cm beams this gives the membership access to a vast majority of the radio spectrum and the world of ‘Ham Radio’.

This new facility will give the club station considerable flexibility in working all of the HF bands and particularly during contests a second HF bean capability which is a major achievement for the club members to enjoy.

This has been a club objective for some considerable time and with the assistance of the Community Centre management team and access permission from Fr Lyn Phillips of St. Augustine's http://www.staugustine.whitton.btinternet.co.uk/Augustine.html the installation was planned. Do make a visit to St. Augustine's web page at it holds many local photographs of our local area as well as information on 400 years of Local History.

A spot was found at the rear of the Community Centre, which suited the radio requirements and placed the antenna system out of general view. The new club asset will be a fantastic advantage for future contesting and radioactivity club evenings. The finished mast will have the club tri-band HF Arial on top.

The numbers of members helping are not all present within the attached photographs as from 8am to midday the cameraman was mostly on household duties or having his hair cut! Club secretaries!!!

Answer Dem G0TSU found a pre decimal 2 pence coin other than not even a worm. This coin was in circulation between 1839 and 1860, Just three portraits of the Queen were used on the penny in the whole of her reign. Copper pennies were issued for all years between 1839 and 1860 except 1840, 1842, 1850, and 1852. The reverse of the coin for the whole of this period was similar to the William IV issue, with a seated right-facing Britannia holding a trident, except that most year the head of the trident was ornamented; the inscription read BRITANNIAR REG FID DEF. So what version do we have? Answer do not have a clue.

Best bit of the day – easy answer – David G0MRF coming back from the fish and chip shop and all of us eating in the rain around the concrete mixer. Was it hard work? answer bloody hell yes but some suffered more that others but I am sure that all could not get home quickly enough for a soaking in the bath.

What a great day and we even had a visit from Fr Lyn who blest our mast at a discounted rate of £10.

Quadrantids Meteorscatter

Through out the day Wednesday 3rd January 2007, Kevin G1KAW started the clubs year with an impressive demonstration of operating under the Clubs call sign G0MIN on the 2m VHF band demonstrating vhf contacts using the Quadrantids meteorscatter. Dem GØTSU and Michael G3WOE helped Kevin G1KAW with Lee GØRHB, David GØMRF, Ian GØOFN, Colin MØDMJ and Garo GØPZA in in attendance.

The vhf station consisted of Yaesu FT736R together with a 200W linear amplifier with two nine-element yagis. With the use of the Internet VHF stations within Europe was contacted to arrange skeds' and the distances worked were remarkable.
